Guadalajara

We were off to Guadalajara in the hotel shuttle.

The shuttle driver was the same guy from last night who appears to love the Mexican sun. This time he discussed with us the people of Mexico City. Apparently other Mexican people seem to think these Chilangos even have an accent (in Spanish). This guy who lived in Iowa at one time was very interesting to talk to.

The shuttle driver drove us right downtown Guad, right down to Centro where immediately I spotted the horse-drawn carriages. There were a lots of them. I am sure the horses were loved. Unfortunately they did not look as healthy as those pulling carriages in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

We visited museums - Museo de Artes Populares (Museum of People's Arts and Crafts) and Las Artes Populares Jalisco. Great exhibits in both. Mexican museums are the best!

We wondered around downtown centro. We saw many big, old buildings, not always knowing their names of significance but appreciating their beauty and architecture.

We know we will return to Guadalajara in the future so we wanted to find a good, economical hotel in the downtown core. We found one called Hotel La Rotonda. It appeared safe, clean, colonial and likely quiet (parking but not at the hotel). Another contender, farther away but within walking distance was a new, modern hotel Perla Central Hotel. It had underground, safe parking.

We did lots of walking around on this day.  Finally we did not want to walk anymore and decided to take a city bus back to an area close to our hotel, El Tapatio. It was a main bus exchange for the area. We than took a taxi up the hill to the hotel. This was a much more economical option than taking a taxi from downtown, plus we were able to get a lot of exercise walking which the full taxi ride would have prevented. I, however, do not think I would have wanted to do this walk at night in downtown Guad.

We ate our usual, in the hotel breakfast, packed up and were off and driving by 8:30 am.

An unusual occurrence! Ken made a wrong turn and we ended up back by the hotel. A sort of Bill Murray, "Ground Hog Day" experience. We did not take the periferico (city by-pass), we drove through the city. There were lots of new and modern looking businesses or buildings. Guadalajara is a very big city.

We drove on the pay highway all the way to Mazatlan. Few events stand out except seeing a field of cows running and walking fast, urged on by the farmer and his dog. There was a burro along side the cows. What was the donkey's story? Was he an acting shepherd or did he think he was on of the herd? We were trying to make time and ate at Tepic's Soriana. We did get to Mazatlan well before dark and found our favourite campground available.

Once situated at San Fernando Trailer Park we walked to Pancho's Restaurant. Pancho's never disappoints. We, however, had to sit upstairs, different for us. A drumming band of young Mexicans entertained us for awhile. Ken realized he got more than his fair share of flea bits somewhere along the line.
